Tweed Valley Highlights: Husk Farm Distillery and beyond
GUEST POST WRITTEN BY KIFF & CULTURE.
Famed for its fertile volcanic soil, the Tweed Valley is a prime food-growing region and a must-visit destination for every epicurean. Should you enjoy nips of top-shelf spirits with a long, lazy lunch, there’s no better venue than Husk Farm Distillery.
In this post, we’ll summarise the Husk story and outline why it’s a highlight of our Tweed Valley tours. We’ll also cover other regional attractions so you can crush your Tweed bucket list in one fell swoop.
The Husk Farm Distillery Story
In the early 90s, Husk’s founder, Paul Messenger, became a big fan of Bill Lark, a single-malt whisky distiller making waves with tasty Tasmanian-made tipples.
Later, while travelling the Caribbean, Paul stumbled upon a novel type of sugar cane rum. Its exotic flavour profile starkly contrasted with the more common English-style molasses rum.
As sugar farming was big business in the Tweed, he decided to grow and produce sugar cane rum on one site—an authentic paddock-to-bottle endeavour. And despite its labour-intensive production process, his innovative product found rapid success. Husk later hit the headlines again with its transformative floral-infused Ink Gin.
Husk credits its success to Tweed’s terroir. Meaning a “sense of place,” the term refers to how Tweed’s volcanic soil and climatic conditions reflect in every bottle.
To preserve its fragile environment, Husk adopts strict eco-friendly farming practices. All organic waste gets composted, and the distillery runs off rainwater collected from the roof. In conjunction with Landcare, Husk has planted over 3,000 native trees across its luscious hinterland farm.
Why We Love Working With Husk Farm Distillery
Zero-kilometre production is a key qualifier for every Kiff & Culture partner. We’re all about promoting locally-grown produce, and Husk is among Australia’s only true paddock-to-bottle distillers.
Plus, we’re a big fan of their steadfast commitment to environmental conservation. Few other booze producers take such extraordinary measures to minimise the impact on their land.
Of course, we only bring guests to venues where the quality of the product is top-notch. From its sensational spirits to gourmet gastronomy, Husk delivers on every front. And then there’s its luscious lawn-strewn venue, which encapsulates the essence of the rural Tweed Valley.
Other Awesome Tweed Valley Attractions
If you’re more of an ale aficionado, you’ll love the farmyard brewery at Earth Beer Company. Set in a repurposed tin-packing shed, this popular local producer pumps out top-quality frothies with a similar eco-friendly approach.
Foodies should tuck into the Tweed’s terrific farm-to-table restaurants. In Cabarita Beach, Paper Daisy is a destination venue inside Halcyon House, Northern NSW’s most fashionable boutique hotel. Tweed River House is another top option for its elegant interiors and refined gourmet fare.
If you’re into artistic expression, the M|Arts Precinct houses an eclectic ensemble of resident creatives. Chat with the artisans in person and purchase works directly from their studios.
