Spring is upon us, and as the concrete jungles heat up, a breezy country getaway is on everyone’s mind. The Tweed Valley is the perfect place to take a long weekend break, with an array of charming villages and unique experiences along the way. From rum tours and river cruises, to cheese tastings and sunflower picking, the Tweed Valley has it all plus a little bit more.

Here are our top six day-tripping tips for visiting the Tweed.

1. Cruise down the Tweed River on the Spirit of Wollumbin

Take a morning river cruise before your afternoon distillery tour. Mount Warning Tours is based in Tumbulgum village, just down the road from Husk. There’s a rainforest discovery tour to Stotts Island or a floating seafood degustation cruise. Either way, the Tweed River has an abundance of flora and fauna to help you get back to nature.

2. Taste exotic fruits and make your own ice cream at Tropical Fruit World
A ten minute drive from Husk is the working farm of Tropical Fruit World. Their recent renovation is something to boast about, with a fresh produce pop-up, charming eatery and home-made ice cream bar. Jump in the tractor-pulled trailer for a tasting tour of the extensive farm with unique fruits you won’t find anywhere else, and take home some souvenirs from the Tweed Valley local artisans’ store. Perfect day out for kids.

3. Visit Australian-owned tea plantation, Madura Tea

Another 10-minute drive from Husk brings you to the Tweed Valley’s very own tea plantation, Madura Tea. Take a tasty back-lot tea tour and sip the latest brew at the pop up tea bar. There’s also a well-stocked retail shop.

4. Stop and smell the sunflowers at Farm & Co

Ever wonder where your friends are getting those beautiful sunflower-filled Instagram shots? A short drive from Husk, in the heart of the Cudgen Plateau, is the organic produce farm of Farm & Co. Take a tour of the flower farm, pat the animals and enjoy a meal made from 100% farm-fresh produce.

5. Get completely cheesed at ‘Tweed Valley Whey’ on Tweed Valley Way

Take a 20-minute drive from Husk into the valley to Burringbar to taste local cheeses at the recently opened ‘Tweed Valley Whey’ cheese factory. Local farming family owned and operated, there’s an array of cheeses, cakes and coffee to entice - an ideal morning tea in the Tweed Valley.

6. Tasty Italian fare, world-class art and local makers at M-Arts

M’Arts precinct is located in the character-filled town of Murwillumbah, a short 10 minute drive from Husk. Built in a disused industrial precinct in the heart of town, M-arts is home to the ‘Gallery Downtown’ an annex of Tweed Regional Gallery. Local artists produce their wares in voyeuristically windowed shipping container studios. If all that art whets your appetite, sit down for wine and an authentic Italian meal at Bacaro restaurant.
